Reasons to teach summarizing:

  • Summarizing involves critical thinking.
  • Summarizing is a skill critical to being both a good READER and WRITER.
  • Summarizing is a “real-world” skill and is used in many ways outside school.
Students must be able to distill information in order to be academically successful.
